Committee on Diversity and Inclusion

Mission

The Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association Committee on Diversity and Inclusion is a voluntary committee that is comprised of OATA Licensed, Student, and Honorary members. The Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association Committee on Diversity and Inclusion recognizes the value of diversity in persons and perspectives. The OATA defines diversity as the range of human differences, including but not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs. The goal of the committee is to promote diversity and to help educate all people on different environments, cultures, and medical conditions.

Objectives

1. Increase the amount of diversity and inform communities of professional responsibilities and duties in the profession of athletic training by:
• High School outreach in local communities. Interacting with students to promote and provide information on diversity and inclusion.
• Collaboration with College and University Athletic Training Programs, as well as community groups, to involve them in the promotion of diversity and inclusion in athletic training.
• Identifying, developing, and mentoring prospective ethnically diverse leaders.
• Advocate for the recruitment and retention of athletic training students by the establishment of grants and scholarships for underrepresented ethnically diverse populations.

2. Work with the OATA to remain current with changes in medical procedures that will affect people of different cultures.
• Educational opportunities for cultural competence in athletic training at educational seminars and symposiums.

Membership

To serve as a member of the Committee on Diversity & Inclusion, members must:
• Be a member of OATA
• Have a passion to help diversify the profession
• Attend committee meetings and conference calls
