OATA NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2016 Print

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S PEN

First comes thought; then organization of that thought,
into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality.
The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination.
- Napoleon Hill

Welcome to 2017 and the season of change that happens at every New Year. Every year, that I can remember, the whole world starts the year working on changing what we want to make better, our health, our organization, our finances, etc. Within just a few months of these “resolutions” millions of people fall off the “wagon” and they go back to their old routines.

Why?

My opinion, through both observation as well as personal experienceJ, is that there was not a clear vision of what they were imagining would happen. The “resolutions” fall flat because often we are just following what we think we need to do and have no clear picture of what or where we want to be.

What are your 2017 “resolutions”? Do you have a clear vision of what the end result looks like? Do any of them have an impact on our profession?

As I look at 2017 there are many things I want to accomplish and many things that I have planned. The vision I have for our profession is one of change and forward movement. This vision involves continuing to reach out to fellow ATs as well as those outside of our profession. It involves pushing all of us to move further out of our comfort zones. It involves making our profession stronger than ever and making every opportunity count.

As we move through 2017, I will be asking for your help both individually as well as a group to share in my vision. There will be many projects, and your involvement will be the key to making these projects successful. Each one of us has a job to give back to the future and each one of us has a little extra to give if we dig deep enough.

What are your resolutions for 2017? Mine is to make our profession stronger so that each one of our professionals will be able to work and each one be able to make a difference in the lives of those they serve. Your involvement is a clear part of that vision and one that I know you will all live up to making happen.

Thank you for your work every day and thank you for giving back to make our future better.

Yours in Service – John

“We are only borrowing this profession”

THOUGHTS FROM THE PRESIDENT-ELECT

The field of athletic training has taken many positive strides this past year thanks to our membership. The fantastic work of our committees, and the motivation of our membership as a voice in the realm of health care, has helped to anchor the profession and drive us forward. As we phase into a new year, please consider some ways you would like to see the profession advance and contact your District Representative and/or reach out to the Executive Committee using the OATA website. We would love to see more people get involved in this upcoming year as well as continue to hear accolades of our colleagues from all over the state.

I’m excited to announce that in January you will receive an Eblast regarding a new committee for the OATA. The Committee on Diversity and Inclusion was created to help grow the profession of athletic training. When the Eblast is released, please use the information provided to get involved with the work this committee is doing. We need people from every district to help continue the amazing work that has already begun.

Thank you to all the members, for all of the work you do! You are making a difference every day. I’m looking forward to another year of serving alongside of you!

Two shorten the road,

Siobhan

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Am Sub SB 252 (Hite) Sudden Cardiac Arrest Passes

Upon the return of the General Assembly in November, the Ohio House of Representatives voted in favor of AM Sub SB 252 89-4, the Senate concurred with House amendments 33-0 and it was sent to the Governor for his signature on December 2nd. The bill will become effective 90 days from the date of signature, and will be known as “Lindsay’s Law”.

As reported previously, the OATA testified as proponents to Am Sub SB 252 (Hite) Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The bill is similar to the approach utilized for youth sports concussion legislation that was enacted a few years ago. Similarly, the bill establishes prohibitions and requirements related to sudden cardiac arrest in athletic activities in most public and non-public schools and in athletic activities organized by youth sports programs, including non-competitive cheerleading.

Additionally, the bill requires an information meeting prior to the start of each athletic season, regarding symptoms and warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest for all ages of youth athletes. A student is prohibited from participating in athletic activities until the student has submitted to an official form signed by the student and their parent or guardian stating they have received and reviewed the guidelines regarding sudden cardiac arrest. Coaches are required to complete a training course on sudden cardiac arrest approved by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH).

Any athlete who has a biological parent or sibling who has experienced sudden cardiac arrest must be evaluated and cleared for participation. Moreover, if the athlete has exhibited syncope or fainting at any time prior to or following an athletic activity and has not been evaluated and cleared for return to participation, the bill requires they must be evaluated by one of the health care providers qualified to clear an athlete to participation. The bill permits the following health care providers to evaluate and return an athlete to participation: 1) a physician, including a cardiologist, 2) a certified nurse practitioner, a clinical nurse specialist, or certified nurse midwife, 3) a physician assistant, or 4) an athletic trainer. The provider must put in writing when an athlete is cleared to return to participation.

Guidelines and other relevant materials required by the bill to educate athletes, parents and coaches will be developed jointly by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) in consultation with the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). The bill request the materials must address the risk associated with continuing to participate in an athletic activity after experience one of more symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest.  Materials identified in the bill as acceptable to utilize include the Parent Heart Watch Organization, the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes Foundation, and any other organizations deemed appropriate by the Departments.

OATA will continue to stay engaged throughout the regulatory process. To review the full text of the bill, click here:  https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/legislation/legislation-summary?id=GA131-SB-252

SECONDARY SCHOOL COMMITTEE

News from the Secondary School Committee

Now is a great time to work on applying for the NATA Safe Sports School Award.  This award is an excellent way to create positive publicity for your athletic training program.  It shows your community the excellent care you provide to your schools' student athletes. Yes, it does have a fee, however GLATA does have grants to offset the fee. Please see the following link for more information. http://www.glata.org/safe-schools-grant-application/

With the assistance of the Korey Stringer Institute we are working to identify and sorting the schools currently located in the no response/unknown category of the Atlas project. If you work in the Secondary School setting, please remember to update your schools information at: http://ksi.uconn.edu/nata-atlas/

The Ohio High School Athletic Association will conduct its Inaugural 7th and 8th Grade Track and Field State Championships on May 13, 2017. This state championship will become the second event the OHSAA has introduced for middle school students. The OHSAA Middle School Cross Country Invitational which takes place in October has been held for the last four years.

How do your patients feel about the services you provide to them? Are the treatments you provide effective? Patient surveys are an important tool to use to determine your success.
