OATA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Congratulations to Chris Mizer who just completed a trip to the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team! 

While jet lagged and not even back in the states, Chris shared some reflections with me on his time at the Olympics. Chris states that it was an "amazing experience and quite the honor to be involved. We had a great staff and a great group of players to work with." "The Olympic experience is a world celebration, and it is exciting to interact with players and staff from all over the world. (It was a) once in a lifetime experience and (I was) thankful to be a part of it."

Thank you Chris for representing our profession and the State of Ohio at the 2018 Winter Olympics!  We are so proud of you, and we appreciate all that you do!

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S PEN

“The sorting we do to ourselves and to one another is, at best, unintentional and reflexive. At worst, it is stereotyping that dehumanizes. The paradox is that we all love the ready-made filing system, so handy when we want to quickly characterize people, but we resent it when we’re the ones getting filed away.” – Brené Brown

The above quote comes from a book titled, “Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone.” Author, and speaker, Brené Brown is known as a researcher with genuine authenticity in addressing the difficult subjects facing our society. One of the focal points in this book centered around our ability to dehumanize each other. Brown says, “Today we are edging closer and closer to a world where political and ideological discourse has become an exercise in dehumanization. And social media are the primary platforms for our dehumanizing behavior. On Twitter and Facebook we can rapidly push the people with whom we disagree into the dangerous territory of moral exclusion, with little to no accountability, and often in complete anonymity.” The athletic training community is not void of contributions towards dehumanization. Often in our desire to manifest our own knowledge, we find ourselves taking to social media to leave a comment on the latest injury we just saw on a nationally televised event or have read in a recent news article. There are times when we have true educational dialog and learn from one another. However, there are also times when the discourse gravitates towards “what we would have done differently” had we been in that situation. And whether we realize it or not, this act goes into dehumanizing the athletic trainers involved in taking care of that injured patient. On the other side of the same coin, we are the first to get agitated when a coach, athletic director, or parent comes to our sideline and questions our evaluation and care of an injury. Too often we engage in the rhetoric of dissecting our profession into categories. We “file” each other away and stamp a label of high school, college, or professional athletic trainer on the folder. And when we file each other into those different folders, it becomes easier to forget that we are all a part of a grander profession together. In our efforts to promote athletic training, we have to re-humanize the way in which we respond to one another.

Brown suggests that one of the ways we can work on re-humanization is through transformative dialogue and action. In traditional conflict resolution we tend to go down a pathway of an agree to disagree dialogue; with no true offer to move through the mess of actually understanding the person on the other side of the argument. Conflict transformation allows for the agree to disagree banter to exist. However, there is a road traveled which goes beyond the point of contention. Where open dialogue and mutual understanding, formulated in the confines of engaged listening to one another, leads to searching for common ground. We all have one strikingly obvious beginning for common ground: We are athletic trainers. The narrative of our history as a profession can continue to have a profound impact on healthcare if we keep coming back to that common ground.

The amazingly talented, Triple Crown actor, Viola Davis has said, “We are all worthy of telling our stories and having them heard. We all need to be seen and honored in the same way that we all need to breathe.” How are we treating each other’s stories? Are we honoring our fellow athletic trainers with the words that we speak about them? Are we re-humanizing our profession, and in turn healthcare, by the way in which we treat the narrative of another person’s life?

THE SECRETARY'S BULLETIN

Website Log In Issues

Log in issues arise for a couple of different reasons. The OATA receives an updated member roster at the beginning of each month from the NATA. We then have to import the new information. This means that from time to time, there might be a lapse between the time you pay your NATA dues and when your information is updated with the OATA. Also, if you are on the NATA payment plan we do not receive your updated information until your dues have been paid in full.  

That being said, Candy and I are always willing to work with you to get your log in activated again, no matter what is causing the technological difficulties!

OTPTAT BOARD REPORT

The Athletic Trainers Section of the OTPTAT Board is conducting its regular CE Audit covering the period of October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2016. Audit notices will come from the board via email to a random sampling of licensees. If you receive a notice, simply submit the proper documentation to the board by the date stated in the notice letter. If you do not receive a notice, you are not subject to audit at this time. In order to ensure that you receive proper notice of audit and also notice of license renewals, please be sure your email address is up-to-date in the eLicense system. To do so, please log in to https://elicense.ohio.gov and click on “manage profile” under your name in the upper right hand corner. You may edit your contact information from there. News from the Secondary School Committee

RULE REVISIONS

The National Federation of State High School Associations has issued rule revisions for high school field hockey and volleyball. The field hockey rules involve increasing the pace of play and a new penalty for a team having too many players on the field. The new rules for volleyball include a new penalty and signal related to unnecessary delay and a new procedure for warming up between sets. The National Federation of State High School Associations has made revisions on five rules involving football for the 2018 season. TEAM PHYSICIAN SERVICES

An essential component to the sports medicine team is the Team Physician. A positive working relationship between the Team Physician and the Athletic Trainer is key to quality care for the patients. There are many things which need to be addressed when developing an agreement with a Team Physician and a summary of these concerns can be found in the NATA’s Guidelines for Developing a Team Physician Services Agreement in the Secondary School. This is a good resource to read even if you already have a Team Physician.  GLATA meeting will be held in Wheeling, Illinois on March 13th through the 17th.

There will be a short secondary school business meeting on Thursday the 15th at 3 pm in which everyone is welcome to attend.

On Friday the 15th at 12:30 pm there will be a secondary school peer-to-peer session which has been very successful in the past.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

District Governance Proposal


Hello GLATA Members!  It is rather unusual for us to write a special e-blast to the entire membership outside of our traditional quarterly newsletter, but this is a special occasion.  Today we are writing to both inform you and to seek your participation in a discussion of our governance structure and how our members are represented at the national level.

To provide some context, currently, we elect one District Director who represents the entire membership within our six states to the NATA.  Our District Director then appoints a single representative to each of the 24 district-based NATA committees.  These committees, such as Governmental Affairs, Committee on Practice Advancement, each of the NATA education committees, etc then conduct the business involved with advancing the profession.  This governance structure has proven to be effective over many years.  However, given the large size of our District, it also deprives our Membership of equal access to representation and to equal opportunities to participate in national discussions impacting our profession when compared to other Districts. 

Inside our six states, our membership receives one set of representatives for every 7,250 voting Members, while outside of our District, athletic trainers receive one set of representatives for every 3,142 members.  Another way to put this is that with over 20% of the national membership one in five athletic trainers reside in District IV, yet we are represented by a governance structure that provides us with a one in ten ratio. 

We, the GLATA Executive Board, have discussed a proposal to reorganize the association into two, three-state districts (the current District IV and a new District XI) to allow for improved representation and participation at the national level.  You can access a summary of the proposal, several informational videos about what the proposal is and what it isn’t, as well as some frequently asked questions on our website, https://www.glata.org/district-governance.  Additionally, there will be several opportunities to attend some live webinars to hear more and ask questions.  Please mark your calendars to attend one of the following:

  • Wednesday, 2/21 @ 9pm Eastern / 8pm Central
  • Tuesday, 2/27 @ 2pm Eastern / 1pm Central
  • Wednesday, 3/7 @ 9pm Eastern / 8pm Central

The Board will be meeting at the Annual Meeting and would like to hear your thoughts on our governance.  We have built a web-based feedback form viaSurveyMonkey for you to submit your thoughts.  The board will meet on March 14thand will discuss governance.  Please submit your feedback by March 12th so that it can be included in the board agenda materials. 

The GLATA Board is committed to transparency of both process and discussion. The process to add a district is scripted in the NATA Bylaws (Section 5.2) and requires multiple steps requiring the entire Membership to participate.  We want to assure that if the decision is made to change our District governance, this decision will be made by the Membership and not by the Executive Board. 

This process will move intentionally and with deliberate precision.  We encourage you to gain as much information as possible, discuss the pros and cons with your colleagues, and ask questions on things you do not understand clearly.  These are important discussions for the present and future of our association and profession.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The OATA Research and Grants Committee are accepting abstracts for the 2018 Annual Symposium.  

DEADLINE MARCH 10, 2018

Abstracts will be accepted from both students and professionals and we have three categories for submission this year!  

Professionals and students may submit original research, case studies, or critically appraised topics.  

The subheadings for each submission type are found in the instructions on the abstract submission page.  

To access the submission page, you should visit www.oata.org then go to AT Resources, select Committees, log-in, and select Research and Grants.  

Any questions can be directed to Shelley Payne, Research and Grants Chair, at spayne@otterbein.edu.  Also, all accepted abstracts will be published in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences!
